The Girl King (The Girl King)

Feature Film Canada Finland France Germany Sweden 2015

Queen Cristina of Sweden is one of the most controversial characters in the history of this Scandinavian country, which she governed in the 17th century. Daughter of the warlike King Gustav Adolphus and Maria Eleanora of Brandenburg, she loved to dress as a man and she publicly showed sympathy for Catholicism, even though she refused to marry. A friend and protector of Descartes, she was a great advocate of progressive policies aimed at making her kingdom more democratic and cultured, turning Stockholm into the "Athens of the North". But, above all,  she openly loved  Countess Ebba Sparre, her lady-in-waiting,  thus creating around her gossip and conspiracies from people who could not accept her in the role of monarch.  Finnish director Mika Kaurismaki tells us her story (already portrayed onscreen by Greta Garbo in The Abdication) in a costume biopic which feels like a historical novel. Three Awards at the Montréal World Film Festival, including the prize for best actress, for Malin Buska.
