Home For The Golden Gays

Documentary Denmark 2011

In a quiet neighbourhood of Manila, in the Philippines, away from the traffic of this crowded Asian city, there is a unique place, the Home of the Golden Gays. Since 1969 it has been a refuge for elderly homosexuals who do not have another place to stay, who have been abandoned by their families, who live alone or who are looking for company. Danish director Nola Grace Gaardmand tells us their stories. Eighty-year-old Leony has spent his life working as a prostitute for American soldiers. Federica, fifty-two, was abandoned as a child by his mother for being too effeminate. Semmy has hidden his real inclinations for fifty-eight years, overwhelmed by fear of the judgment of other people and by the Catholic teachings he was raised with, and now comes to this very unusual home as a visitor. An amazing documentary that, thanks also to the brilliant cinematography and inspired choice of music, celebrates the humanity of the main characters.
